IRONBARK HOUSE{Studio Carson Kelly Architects. 2024-2025}
A South Coast retreat nestled in the bushland canopy.
Set within the rugged bushland of Ulladulla on the NSW South Coast, Ironbark House is a thoughtfully crafted residential project that responds directly to its site — balancing bushfire compliance, coastal conditions, and long-term performance without compromising on quality.
Externally, the home is clad in corrugated Zincalume steel, selected for its resilience and low maintenance in a coastal climate. The structure is arranged as a series of simple barn-like forms, positioned in response to the site's topography and setback requirements.
The layout is organised around a central courtyard, with two building volumes creating separation between living and private zones. Careful placement on the block achieves an elevated outlook that gives the impression of sitting within the tree canopy, achieved entirely on a single level.
Internally, the material palette is clean and consistent. Openings are strategically positioned to maximise natural light, cross-ventilation, and views while maintaining bushfire protection requirements.
Ironbark House is a strong example of site-responsive construction, where planning, material selection, and build quality come together to deliver a durable, efficient, and well-resolved home suited to its environment.
