MOLLY HOUSE{MUM Architects. 2020-2021}
Modern brutalism meets Australiana.
Located at the southern end of Mollymook Beach, The Molly House is a unique home delivering a strong focus on detailed finishes, durability, functionality, and site integration.
Constructed on a sloping block, the project involved significant earthworks to step the home into the landscape rather than relying on a raised structure. This approach maximises usable outdoor space and allows the home to sit low and unobtrusive from the street, while opening up internally as you move through the building. The build features a robust material palette suited to coastal conditions, including hardwood cladding, exposed galvanised steel, and polished concrete floors. These materials were selected for their structural performance, low maintenance, and ability to weather naturally over time.
The layout has been designed to maximise natural light and passive performance. Floor-to-ceiling glazing, a central void, and carefully designed eaves allow for strong solar access in winter while limiting heat gain in summer, reducing the need for mechanical heating and cooling.
Internally, the home connects directly to its surroundings, with living areas and bedrooms oriented toward landscaped gardens and outdoor spaces. The result is a practical, well-resolved home that responds to its site, supports comfortable family living, and is built to perform in a coastal environment.
